Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proof

Proof of the polar decomposition from the singular value decomposition

Builds on Singular value decompositionUnitary matrixConjugate transposeHermitian matrixPositive semidefinite matrixGram matrices are positive semidefiniteSquare root of a positive semidefinite matrixOne-sided inverse of a square matrix is two-sidedTranspose of a productDeterminant is multiplicativeA square matrix is invertible iff its determinant is nonzero

Proof

Here ∗^* is the conjugate transpose, and (XY)∗=Y∗X∗(XY)^* = Y^* X^* by the transpose of a product with conjugated entries.

  1. If XX and YY are unitary n×nn \times n matrices, then (XY)∗XY=Y∗X∗XY=I(XY)^* XY = Y^* X^* X Y = I. So XYXY is unitary.
  2. If XX is unitary, then XX∗=IX X^* = I by the one-sided inverse theorem. So X∗X^* is unitary too.
  3. By the singular value decomposition, A=WΣV∗A = W \Sigma V^* with WW and VV unitary n×nn \times n matrices. Here Σ\Sigma is diagonal with real entries σ1,…,σn≥0\sigma_1, \dots, \sigma_n \ge 0.
  4. Let U=WV∗U = W V^* and P=VΣV∗P = V \Sigma V^*. By steps 1 and 2, UU is unitary.
  5. Since Σ\Sigma is real and diagonal, Σ∗=Σ\Sigma^* = \Sigma. So P∗=VΣ∗V∗=PP^* = V \Sigma^* V^* = P, and PP is Hermitian.
  6. Let x∈ℂnx \in \C^n and y=V∗xy = V^* x. Then x∗Px=y∗Σy=∑iσi∣yi∣2≥0x^* P x = y^* \Sigma y = \sum_i \sigma_i \abs{y_i}^2 \ge 0. So PP is positive semidefinite.
  7. Since V∗V=IV^* V = I, we get UP=WV∗VΣV∗=WΣV∗=AUP = W V^* V \Sigma V^* = W \Sigma V^* = A. This proves existence.
  8. For uniqueness of PP, let A=UPA = UP with UU unitary and PP positive semidefinite Hermitian. Then A∗A=P∗U∗UP=P2A^* A = P^* U^* U P = P^2.
  9. By the Gram matrix result, A∗AA^* A is positive semidefinite. By step 8, PP is a positive semidefinite matrix whose square is A∗AA^* A.
  10. By the definition of the square root, there is exactly one such matrix. So P=(A∗A)1/2P = (A^* A)^{1/2}.
  11. Now let AA be invertible, and let A=UPA = UP as in step 8. Since the determinant is multiplicative, det⁡Udet⁡P=det⁡A≠0\det U \det P = \det A \ne 0.
  12. So det⁡P≠0\det P \ne 0, and PP is invertible. Then U=AP−1U = A P^{-1}.
  13. By step 10, PP is determined by AA. So U=AP−1U = A P^{-1} is determined by AA as well.

Idea

The singular value decomposition WΣV∗W \Sigma V^* already contains a rotation and a stretch. Regrouping it as (WV∗)(VΣV∗)(W V^*)(V \Sigma V^*) gives a unitary factor times a positive semidefinite factor. Any such factorisation has P2=A∗AP^2 = A^* A, and square roots of positive semidefinite matrices are unique.
