Proof of continuity via open sets in metric spaces

Builds on Metric spaceOpen setPreimage of a setOpen ballOpen balls are openOpen sets of a metric space

Proof

We prove each implication separately.

  1. Let (X,dX)(X, d_X) and (Y,dY)(Y, d_Y) be metric spaces and let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y.
  2. Write BX(a,δ)B_X(a, \delta) and BY(b,ε)B_Y(b, \varepsilon) for the open balls of XX and YY. By the symmetry of a metric, x∈BX(a,δ)x \in B_X(a, \delta) if and only if dX(x,a)<δd_X(x, a) < \delta.
  3. Assume condition 1. Let VV be an open set of YY, and let aa be in the preimage f−1(V)f^{-1}(V).
  4. Then f(a)∈Vf(a) \in V. By the description of the open sets of a metric space, there is ε>0\varepsilon > 0 with BY(f(a),ε)⊆VB_Y(f(a), \varepsilon) \subseteq V.
  5. Condition 1 gives δ>0\delta > 0 such that dX(x,a)<δd_X(x, a) < \delta implies dY(f(x),f(a))<εd_Y(f(x), f(a)) < \varepsilon.
  6. Let x∈BX(a,δ)x \in B_X(a, \delta). By step 2 and step 5, dY(f(x),f(a))<εd_Y(f(x), f(a)) < \varepsilon.
  7. By symmetry, f(x)∈BY(f(a),ε)⊆Vf(x) \in B_Y(f(a), \varepsilon) \subseteq V, so x∈f−1(V)x \in f^{-1}(V). Thus BX(a,δ)⊆f−1(V)B_X(a, \delta) \subseteq f^{-1}(V).
  8. Each point of f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) has a ball about it inside f−1(V)f^{-1}(V). By the description of open sets, f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) is open. This is condition 2.
  9. Now assume condition 2. Let a∈Xa \in X and ε>0\varepsilon > 0. Put V=BY(f(a),ε)V = B_Y(f(a), \varepsilon).
  10. By open balls are open, VV is open. By condition 2, f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) is open in XX.
  11. Since dY(f(a),f(a))=0<εd_Y(f(a), f(a)) = 0 < \varepsilon, we have f(a)∈Vf(a) \in V, so a∈f−1(V)a \in f^{-1}(V).
  12. By the description of open sets, there is δ>0\delta > 0 with BX(a,δ)⊆f−1(V)B_X(a, \delta) \subseteq f^{-1}(V).
  13. Let x∈Xx \in X with dX(x,a)<δd_X(x, a) < \delta. By step 2, x∈BX(a,δ)x \in B_X(a, \delta), so f(x)∈Vf(x) \in V.
  14. So dY(f(a),f(x))<εd_Y(f(a), f(x)) < \varepsilon, and by symmetry dY(f(x),f(a))<εd_Y(f(x), f(a)) < \varepsilon. This is condition 1.

Idea

An open set contains a ball about each of its points, and balls are open. Condition 1 says that a small ball about aa maps into a given ball about f(a)f(a). Translating between balls and open sets gives each direction.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
