Definition

Let Ω⊆ℂ\Omega \subseteq \C be an open set, and let Γ\Gamma be a family of locally rectifiable curves in Ω\Omega. A metric on Ω\Omega is a Borel measurable function ρ ⁣:Ω→[0,∞]\rho \colon \Omega \to [0, \infty] with area A(ρ)=∫Ωρ(x+iy)2 dx dyA(\rho) = \int_\Omega \rho(x + iy)^2 \, dx\, dy satisfying 0<A(ρ)<∞0 < A(\rho) < \infty. The ρ\rho-length of Γ\Gamma is Lρ(Γ)=inf⁡γ∈Γ∫γρ ∣dz∣,L_\rho(\Gamma) = \inf_{\gamma \in \Gamma} \int_\gamma \rho \, \abs{dz}, the integral being with respect to arc length. The extremal length of Γ\Gamma is λ(Γ)=sup⁡ρLρ(Γ)2A(ρ)∈[0,∞],\lambda(\Gamma) = \sup_{\rho} \frac{L_\rho(\Gamma)^2}{A(\rho)} \in [0, \infty], the supremum taken over all metrics ρ\rho on Ω\Omega.

Remarks

The value does not change if Ω\Omega is replaced by a larger open set and ρ\rho is extended by 00. If f ⁣:Ω→Ω′f \colon \Omega \to \Omega' is a conformal map, then λ(f(Γ))=λ(Γ)\lambda(f(\Gamma)) = \lambda(\Gamma): the metric ρ\rho on Ω′\Omega' pulls back to (ρ∘f)∣f′∣(\rho \circ f)\abs{f'} with the same lengths and area. Example: let R=(0,a)×(0,b)R = (0, a) \times (0, b) and let Γ\Gamma be the curves in RR that join the left side to the right side. For ρ=1\rho = 1, Lρ=aL_\rho = a and A(ρ)=abA(\rho) = ab, so λ(Γ)≥a/b\lambda(\Gamma) \ge a/b. For any metric, each horizontal segment gives ∫0aρ(x+iy) dx≥Lρ\int_0^a \rho(x + iy)\, dx \ge L_\rho, so by integrating in yy and the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, bLρ≤∫Rρ≤ab A(ρ)b L_\rho \le \int_R \rho \le \sqrt{ab\, A(\rho)}, and λ(Γ)=a/b\lambda(\Gamma) = a/b. Non-example: ρ=0\rho = 0 is not a metric, since its area is 00; it would give the meaningless ratio 0/00/0. If every curve of Γ1\Gamma_1 contains a curve of Γ2\Gamma_2, then λ(Γ1)≥λ(Γ2)\lambda(\Gamma_1) \ge \lambda(\Gamma_2).
