Proof that a C^1 map with invertible derivative is a local homeomorphism and an open map

Proof
We apply the inverse function theorem at each point.
- Let and be as in the statement, and let . Since is invertible, its Jacobian determinant is not zero.
- By the inverse function theorem with , there are open sets and with and . The map restricted to is a bijection onto . Its inverse is of class . So is open.
- A function that is differentiable at a point is continuous at . Indeed, with , and both terms tend to as .
- The maps and are of class , so they are differentiable at each point of their open domains. By step 3, restricted to and are continuous.
- So restricted to is a continuous bijection onto with continuous inverse. That is, it is a homeomorphism onto the open set .
- Now let be open, and let , say with .
- The restriction of to the open set is of class with invertible derivative at each point. By steps 1 to 5 applied to it, there is an open with and open.
- Then . So each point of has an open neighbourhood inside , and is open.
- Hence is an open map.
Idea
The inverse function theorem gives, around each point, an open set on which has a inverse. Differentiable maps are continuous, so this local inverse is continuous and is a homeomorphism there. An open set is a union of such neighbourhoods, so its image is a union of open sets.
