Real functions Proof

Proof that there is a natural number n with 1/n below any positive epsilon

Builds on The reals are ArchimedeanThe reals form an ordered fieldOrdered field

Proof

  1. Let ε\varepsilon be a real number with ε>0\varepsilon > 0.
  2. Since the reals are Archimedean, applied with x=1x = 1 and y=εy = \varepsilon, there is a natural number nn with nε>1n \varepsilon > 1.
  3. We have n≥1n \ge 1. Indeed, for n=0n = 0 we would get 0⋅ε=0>10 \cdot \varepsilon = 0 > 1, but 0<10 < 1 in each ordered field.
  4. In the ordered field ℝ\R, if a<ba < b and c>0c > 0, then ac<bca c < b c. Indeed, (b−a)c≥0(b - a) c \ge 0 by the product axiom, and (b−a)c≠0(b - a) c \ne 0 because both factors are nonzero.
  5. Since 0<10 < 1 and n≥1n \ge 1, adding 11 repeatedly gives 0<n0 < n. The number 1/n1/n is positive. It is nonzero. If 1/n<01/n < 0, then −1/n>0-1/n > 0, and step 4 with 0<n0 < n gives 0<n⋅(−1/n)=−10 < n \cdot (-1/n) = -1, which is false.
  6. Multiply 1<nε1 < n \varepsilon by 1/n>01/n > 0, using step 4. This gives 1/n<ε1/n < \varepsilon.

Idea

The Archimedean property says that enough copies of ε\varepsilon exceed 11. Dividing nε>1n \varepsilon > 1 by nn gives 1/n<ε1/n < \varepsilon.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 37 pages in order. The foundations come first. The path takes the proofs Proof of the approximation property of the supremum, Proof that the reals form an ordered field, with the Cauchy sequence construction, Proof that the reals are Archimedean from the completeness axiom.
