Partial differential equations Proof

Proof of the Laplacian as a sum of second partial derivatives

Builds on LaplacianDivergenceGradientDifferentiable function of several variablesPartial derivativeHigher partial derivatives

Proof

We unfold the definitions.

  1. Let f ⁣:U→ℝf \colon U \to \R be twice differentiable on the open set U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n. Then ff is differentiable at each point of UU.
  2. By the coordinate form of the gradient, ∇f=(g1,…,gn)\nabla f = (g_1, \dots, g_n) on UU, where gi=∂f/∂xig_i = \partial f / \partial x_i is a partial derivative.
  3. The map x↦Df(x)x \mapsto Df(x) is differentiable on UU, since ff is twice differentiable. Its entries in the standard basis are g1,…,gng_1, \dots, g_n, so each gig_i is differentiable on UU.
  4. Hence each partial derivative ∂gi/∂xi\partial g_i / \partial x_i exists on UU. By the definition of higher partial derivatives, ∂gi/∂xi=∂2f/∂xi2\partial g_i / \partial x_i = \partial^2 f / \partial x_i^2.
  5. By the definition of the divergence, div⁡(∇f)=∑i=1n∂gi/∂xi\operatorname{div}(\nabla f) = \sum_{i=1}^n \partial g_i / \partial x_i.
  6. By the definition of the Laplacian and steps 4 and 5, Δf=div⁡(∇f)=∂2f∂x12+⋯+∂2f∂xn2\Delta f = \operatorname{div}(\nabla f) = \frac{\partial^2 f}{\partial x_1^2} + \dots + \frac{\partial^2 f}{\partial x_n^2}.

Idea

The gradient collects the first partial derivatives of ff. The divergence then differentiates the ii-th of them in the direction xix_i and adds the results. So only the unmixed second derivatives appear.
