Potential theory Proof

Proof that the real part of a holomorphic function is harmonic

Builds on Holomorphic functionHolomorphic functions are infinitely differentiableCauchy–Riemann equationsSchwarz's theorem for C^2 functionsC^k function characterised by continuous derivativesHarmonic functionReal and imaginary parts

Proof

We differentiate the Cauchy–Riemann equations once more and use the symmetry of mixed partial derivatives.

  1. Since ff is holomorphic on UU, holomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable. So, as a function of (x,y)(x, y), ff has continuous partial derivatives of all orders on UU.
  2. The partial derivatives of ff are those of uu plus ii times those of vv, by the definition of real and imaginary parts. So all partial derivatives of uu and vv exist and are continuous on UU.
  3. In particular, uu and vv are of class C2C^2 on UU. This is the first claim.
  4. Since ff is complex differentiable at each point of UU, the Cauchy–Riemann equations hold at each point of UU: ux=vyu_x = v_y and uy=−vxu_y = -v_x on UU.
  5. These are equalities of functions on the open set UU. So we may differentiate both sides. Differentiating ux=vyu_x = v_y in xx gives uxx=(vy)xu_{xx} = (v_y)_x.
  6. Differentiating uy=−vxu_y = -v_x in yy gives uyy=−(vx)yu_{yy} = -(v_x)_y.
  7. Since vv is of class C2C^2, Schwarz's theorem gives (vy)x=(vx)y(v_y)_x = (v_x)_y on UU.
  8. Adding steps 5 and 6 and using step 7 gives uxx+uyy=(vy)x−(vx)y=0u_{xx} + u_{yy} = (v_y)_x - (v_x)_y = 0 on UU.
  9. Differentiating uy=−vxu_y = -v_x in xx gives (uy)x=−vxx(u_y)_x = -v_{xx}. Differentiating ux=vyu_x = v_y in yy gives (ux)y=vyy(u_x)_y = v_{yy}.
  10. Schwarz's theorem for uu gives (uy)x=(ux)y(u_y)_x = (u_x)_y. So vxx+vyy=−(uy)x+(ux)y=0v_{xx} + v_{yy} = -(u_y)_x + (u_x)_y = 0 on UU.
  11. By steps 3, 8 and 10, uu and vv are of class C2C^2 with zero Laplacian. So they are harmonic on UU.

Idea

The Cauchy–Riemann equations tie the first derivatives of uu to those of vv. Differentiating once more, the two second derivatives uxxu_{xx} and uyyu_{yy} become the same mixed derivative of vv with opposite signs. The real work is hidden in step 1: we need to know that ff has second derivatives at all.
