Proof of the description of the open sets of a metric space
Proof
We unfold the definitions.
- Let be a metric space and let .
- By the definition of an open set of a metric space, is open in if and only if . Here is the metric topology.
- By the definition of , we have if and only if each has a real with .
- Here is the open ball with centre and radius .
- Steps 2 and 3 together give: is open if and only if each has an with .
Idea
The open sets of a metric space are by definition the members of the metric topology. That topology is defined by the ball condition, so the statement only puts the two definitions side by side.
