Proof

We show that AA equals its closure.

  1. Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space and let A⊆XA \subseteq X. Assume AA with the subspace metric dAd_A is complete.
  2. Let xx be a point of the closure A‾\overline{A}.
  3. Since the closure is the set of limits of sequences, there is a sequence (an)(a_n) of points of AA that converges to xx in XX.
  4. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. There is NN with d(an,x)<ε/2d(a_n, x) < \varepsilon / 2 for n≥Nn \ge N.
  5. For m,n≥Nm, n \ge N, the triangle inequality gives dA(am,an)=d(am,an)≤d(am,x)+d(x,an)<εd_A(a_m, a_n) = d(a_m, a_n) \le d(a_m, x) + d(x, a_n) < \varepsilon.
  6. So (an)(a_n) is a Cauchy sequence in (A,dA)(A, d_A). Since AA is complete, (an)(a_n) converges in AA to some a∈Aa \in A.
  7. Since d(an,a)=dA(an,a)d(a_n, a) = d_A(a_n, a), the sequence (an)(a_n) also converges to aa in XX.
  8. For each nn, d(x,a)≤d(x,an)+d(an,a)d(x, a) \le d(x, a_n) + d(a_n, a). The right side tends to 00, so d(x,a)<εd(x, a) < \varepsilon for every real ε>0\varepsilon > 0.
  9. So d(x,a)=0d(x, a) = 0. A metric is positive on distinct points, so x=ax = a, and thus x∈Ax \in A.
  10. By steps 2 to 9, A‾⊆A\overline{A} \subseteq A. Also A⊆A‾A \subseteq \overline{A}, because the closure is the smallest closed superset.
  11. So A‾=A\overline{A} = A. Since a set is closed iff it equals its closure, AA is closed in XX.

Idea

A point of the closure is a limit of points of AA. Such a sequence is Cauchy, so completeness of AA gives it a limit inside AA. Limits are unique, so the original point is that limit and lies in AA.
