Proof

We argue by contradiction: in infinite dimension, Riesz's lemma gives unit vectors that stay far apart.

  1. Let Bˉ={x∈X:∥x∥≤1}\bar{B} = \{x \in X : \|x\| \le 1\} be compact, and suppose that XX is not finite-dimensional. Then XX has no finite spanning set. In particular X≠{0}X \neq \{0\}.
  2. We build unit vectors x1,x2,…x_1, x_2, \ldots with ∥xm−xn∥≥12\|x_m - x_n\| \ge \tfrac{1}{2} for m≠nm \neq n. Choose any x1≠0x_1 \neq 0 and replace it by x1/∥x1∥x_1 / \|x_1\|.
  3. Given x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n, let YnY_n be their linear span. It is a linear subspace, and Yn≠XY_n \neq X because XX has no finite spanning set.
  4. YnY_n with the restricted norm is a finite-dimensional normed space. So it is complete, by finite-dimensional normed spaces are complete.
  5. Its metric is the restriction of the metric of XX. So YnY_n is closed in XX, by complete subspaces are closed.
  6. By Riesz's lemma with α=12\alpha = \tfrac{1}{2}, there is xn+1x_{n+1} with ∥xn+1∥=1\|x_{n+1}\| = 1 and ∥xn+1−y∥≥12\|x_{n+1} - y\| \ge \tfrac{1}{2} for all y∈Yny \in Y_n.
  7. For m>nm > n, we have xn∈Ym−1x_n \in Y_{m-1}. So ∥xm−xn∥≥12\|x_m - x_n\| \ge \tfrac{1}{2}, by step 6 for xmx_m.
  8. All xnx_n lie in Bˉ\bar{B}. As Bˉ\bar{B} is compact in the metric space XX, it is sequentially compact, by this result.
  9. So some subsequence (xnk)(x_{n_k}) converges to a point zz. There is k0k_0 with ∥xnk−z∥<14\|x_{n_k} - z\| < \tfrac{1}{4} for k≥k0k \ge k_0.
  10. Then ∥xnk0−xnk0+1∥≤∥xnk0−z∥+∥z−xnk0+1∥<12\|x_{n_{k_0}} - x_{n_{k_0 + 1}}\| \le \|x_{n_{k_0}} - z\| + \|z - x_{n_{k_0 + 1}}\| < \tfrac{1}{2}, with nk0≠nk0+1n_{k_0} \neq n_{k_0 + 1}. This contradicts step 7.
  11. So XX is finite-dimensional.

Idea

In infinite dimension, each finite-dimensional subspace is a closed proper subspace. Riesz's lemma then gives a new unit vector far from all previous ones. The resulting sequence has no convergent subsequence, so the unit ball cannot be compact.
