General topology Proof

Proof of continuity via closed sets

Builds on Topological spaceContinuous map of topological spacesClosed setPreimage of a setComplementComplement of an open set is closed

Proof

We first show that preimages commute with complements.

  1. Let XX and YY be topological spaces and let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y.
  2. Let A⊆YA \subseteq Y and x∈Xx \in X. Then xx lies in the preimage f−1(Y∖A)f^{-1}(Y \setminus A) if and only if f(x)∉Af(x) \notin A.
  3. This holds if and only if x∉f−1(A)x \notin f^{-1}(A). So f−1(Y∖A)=X∖f−1(A)f^{-1}(Y \setminus A) = X \setminus f^{-1}(A), with X∖f−1(A)X \setminus f^{-1}(A) the complement.
  4. Suppose ff is continuous, and let FF be a closed set of YY.
  5. By the definition of a closed set, Y∖FY \setminus F is open. By continuity, f−1(Y∖F)f^{-1}(Y \setminus F) is open in XX.
  6. By step 3, X∖f−1(F)X \setminus f^{-1}(F) is open. By the definition of a closed set, f−1(F)f^{-1}(F) is closed.
  7. Conversely, suppose that each closed FF of YY has a closed preimage. Let VV be open in YY.
  8. By complement of an open set is closed, Y∖VY \setminus V is closed in YY. By hypothesis, f−1(Y∖V)f^{-1}(Y \setminus V) is closed in XX.
  9. By step 3, X∖f−1(V)X \setminus f^{-1}(V) is closed. By the same result, f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) is open.
  10. As VV was arbitrary, ff is continuous.

Idea

Closed sets are the complements of open sets. Taking preimages commutes with taking complements. So the condition on open sets and the condition on closed sets say the same thing.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
