Osculating circle
Builds on Curvature of a curveRegular curveTangent vector of a curveCircle
Definition
Let be a regular curve of class on an interval , and let . Let be its unit tangent vector, let be rotated by a right angle counterclockwise, and let be its signed curvature. Assume that . The centre of curvature at is , and the radius of curvature is . The osculating circle of at is the circle with centre and radius .
Remarks
Example: for at , one has , and . So the osculating circle has centre and radius . Non-example: for at , the curvature is , so there is no osculating circle there; the tangent line plays its role. The osculating circle passes through , has the same tangent there, and is the only circle with contact of order at least with the curve. For a curve in with , the osculating circle is defined in the same way, with the principal normal. It lies in the osculating plane, spanned by and .
