Definition
Consider a system of point particles with position vector . Let be open, and let be smooth functions on . Let the system obey the independent time-independent holonomic constraints . The configuration space of the system is the set By the regular value theorem, is a submanifold of of dimension whenever it is not empty.
Remarks
Example: a particle on a sphere of radius has the single constraint on . Its gradient is nonzero on , so is the sphere, a surface of dimension . Non-example: the constraints and for one particle in define the plane . Their gradients and are dependent on that plane, and the count is wrong; independence excludes such families. For a system with no constraints, is the open set , for example . More abstractly, a configuration space is any smooth manifold whose points label the positions of the system. For instance, is the configuration space of a rigid body with one fixed point.
