Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold. A symplectic form on MM is a differential 22-form ω\omega on MM such that:

  1. ω\omega is closed: dω=0d\omega = 0, where dd is the exterior derivative;
  2. ω\omega is nondegenerate: for each p∈Mp \in M and each nonzero v∈TpMv \in T_p M there is w∈TpMw \in T_p M with ωp(v,w)≠0\omega_p(v, w) \ne 0.

A symplectic manifold is a pair (M,ω)(M, \omega) of a smooth manifold and a symplectic form on it.

Remarks

Example: ℝ2n\R^{2n} with coordinates (x1,…,xn,y1,…,yn)(x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n) and ω0=∑k=1ndxk∧dyk\omega_0 = \sum_{k=1}^n dx_k \wedge dy_k. It has constant coefficients, so dω0=0d\omega_0 = 0. If v≠0v \ne 0 has a nonzero component vxkv_{x_k}, then ω0(v,∂yk)=vxk≠0\omega_0(v, \partial_{y_k}) = v_{x_k} \ne 0, and similarly if vyk≠0v_{y_k} \ne 0 one pairs with ∂xk\partial_{x_k}; so ω0\omega_0 is nondegenerate.

Non-example: the sphere S4S^4 has no symplectic form. On a closed manifold of dimension 2n2n, ωn\omega^n is a volume form, so the class [ω]n[\omega]^n is nonzero and hence [ω]≠0[\omega] \ne 0 in HdR2(M)H^2_{dR}(M); but HdR2(S4)=0H^2_{dR}(S^4) = 0.

Clause 2 says that each (TpM,ωp)(T_p M, \omega_p) is a symplectic vector space, so dim⁡M\dim M is even. Other standard examples are oriented surfaces with an area form and cotangent bundles T∗QT^* Q with the form −dθ-d\theta built from the tautological one-form θ\theta. Darboux's theorem says that near each point there are coordinates in which ω=ω0\omega = \omega_0.
