Mechanical similarity

Builds on Potential energyNewton's laws of motion

Definition

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n be an open set with λU=U\lambda U = U for all λ>0\lambda > 0. Let V ⁣:U→ℝV \colon U \to \R be a potential energy of class C1C^1 that is homogeneous of degree k∈ℝk \in \R, that is, V(λq)=λkV(q)V(\lambda q) = \lambda^k V(q) for all λ>0\lambda > 0 and q∈Uq \in U. Consider the equations of motion Mq¨=−∇V(q)M \ddot q = -\nabla V(q) given by Newton's second law, where MM is a fixed positive definite diagonal matrix of masses. For α>0\alpha > 0, set β=α1−k/2\beta = \alpha^{1 - k/2}. The mechanical similarity with ratio α\alpha maps a curve q(t)q(t) in UU to the curve q~(t)=α q(t/β).\tilde q(t) = \alpha\, q(t / \beta). Two motions are mechanically similar if one is the image of the other under a mechanical similarity.

Remarks

The key property: the image of a motion is again a motion. Indeed ∇V\nabla V is homogeneous of degree k−1k - 1, so Mq~¨(t)=αβ2Mq¨(t/β)=−αβ2∇V(q(t/β))M \ddot{\tilde q}(t) = \frac{\alpha}{\beta^2} M \ddot q(t/\beta) = -\frac{\alpha}{\beta^2} \nabla V(q(t/\beta)), while −∇V(q~(t))=−αk−1∇V(q(t/β))-\nabla V(\tilde q(t)) = -\alpha^{k-1} \nabla V(q(t/\beta)), and α/β2=αk−1\alpha/\beta^2 = \alpha^{k-1}. Times scale by β\beta and the energy scales by αk\alpha^k. Example: for the Kepler potential V=−c/∣q∣V = -c/\abs{q}, k=−1k = -1 and β=α3/2\beta = \alpha^{3/2}, so periods PP and sizes aa of similar orbits satisfy P2∝a3P^2 \propto a^3, as in Kepler's third law. Non-example: for V(q)=∣q∣2+∣q∣4V(q) = \abs{q}^2 + \abs{q}^4, which is not homogeneous, no single exponent works, and the scaled curve of a motion is in general not a motion.
