Proof

We reduce to C1C^1 pieces and apply the fundamental theorem of calculus to ϕ∘γ\phi \circ \gamma.

  1. Since γ\gamma is piecewise C1C^1, there is a partition a=p0<⋯<pm=ba = p_0 < \dots < p_m = b such that the restriction γ(l)\gamma^{(l)} of γ\gamma to [pl−1,pl][p_{l-1}, p_l] is C1C^1 for each ll.
  2. Since ϕ\phi is of class C1C^1, its partial derivatives are continuous on UU. So the gradient field ∇ϕ\nabla \phi is continuous, and its line integrals over γ\gamma and over each γ(l)\gamma^{(l)} are defined.
  3. By additivity under concatenation, applied m−1m - 1 times, ∫γ∇ϕ⋅d𝐫=∑l=1m∫γ(l)∇ϕ⋅d𝐫\int_\gamma \nabla \phi \cdot d\mathbf{r} = \sum_{l=1}^{m} \int_{\gamma^{(l)}} \nabla \phi \cdot d\mathbf{r}.
  4. By the parametric formula, ∫γ(l)∇ϕ⋅d𝐫=∫pl−1pl∇ϕ(γ(t))⋅γ′(t) dt\int_{\gamma^{(l)}} \nabla \phi \cdot d\mathbf{r} = \int_{p_{l-1}}^{p_l} \nabla \phi(\gamma(t)) \cdot \gamma'(t) \, dt.
  5. Since its partial derivatives are continuous, ϕ\phi is differentiable at each point of UU, by continuous partial derivatives imply differentiability.
  6. Let t∈(pl−1,pl)t \in (p_{l-1}, p_l). By the chain rule for a composition with a curve on the open interval (pl−1,pl)(p_{l-1}, p_l), (ϕ∘γ)′(t)=Dϕ(γ(t))(γ′(t))(\phi \circ \gamma)'(t) = D\phi(\gamma(t))(\gamma'(t)).
  7. By the definition of the gradient, Dϕ(γ(t))(γ′(t))=∇ϕ(γ(t))⋅γ′(t)D\phi(\gamma(t))(\gamma'(t)) = \nabla \phi(\gamma(t)) \cdot \gamma'(t).
  8. The function ϕ∘γ\phi \circ \gamma is continuous on [pl−1,pl][p_{l-1}, p_l]. The function t↦∇ϕ(γ(t))⋅γ′(t)t \mapsto \nabla \phi(\gamma(t)) \cdot \gamma'(t) is continuous there, and by steps 6 and 7 it is the derivative of ϕ∘γ\phi \circ \gamma on the open interval.
  9. By the fundamental theorem of calculus, ∫pl−1pl∇ϕ(γ(t))⋅γ′(t) dt=ϕ(γ(pl))−ϕ(γ(pl−1))\int_{p_{l-1}}^{p_l} \nabla \phi(\gamma(t)) \cdot \gamma'(t) \, dt = \phi(\gamma(p_l)) - \phi(\gamma(p_{l-1})).
  10. Summing over ll with steps 3 and 4, the sum telescopes: ∫γ∇ϕ⋅d𝐫=ϕ(γ(pm))−ϕ(γ(p0))=ϕ(γ(b))−ϕ(γ(a))\int_\gamma \nabla \phi \cdot d\mathbf{r} = \phi(\gamma(p_m)) - \phi(\gamma(p_0)) = \phi(\gamma(b)) - \phi(\gamma(a)).

Idea

Along the curve, the integrand ∇ϕ(γ(t))⋅γ′(t)\nabla \phi(\gamma(t)) \cdot \gamma'(t) is the derivative of ϕ(γ(t))\phi(\gamma(t)), by the chain rule. So the line integral is the integral of a derivative, and the fundamental theorem of calculus leaves only the values of ϕ\phi at the ends.
