Proof of the derivative as a little-o approximation
Builds on Fréchet derivativeNormed vector space
Proof
We unfold the definition of the limit in both directions.
- Let , , , , and be as in the statement, with and normed vector spaces. For with , put .
- Then for each such , and .
- By the definition of the Fréchet derivative, is the derivative of at exactly when as . The limit is over with .
- Suppose first that is the derivative. Let . By step 3 there is with for and .
- For these , multiplying by gives .
- For , step 2 gives . So for each with and . Thus .
- Conversely, suppose that . Let . Apply the little-o condition to . This gives with for and .
- For with , divide by . This gives .
- So as . By step 3, is the Fréchet derivative of at .
Idea
The two conditions say the same thing about the error . The limit form divides by , and the little-o form multiplies back. The only extra point is , where the error is , so the inequality holds there too.
