Statement

Let D⊂ℂD \subset \C be a bounded open set whose boundary ∂D\partial D consists of finitely many piecewise C1C^1 closed curves. Orient ∂D\partial D so that DD lies on the left. Let ff be a continuously differentiable complex-valued function on an open set that contains the closure Dˉ\bar D. Then for each z∈Dz \in D, f(z)=12πi∮∂Df(ζ)ζ−z dζ−1π∬D∂f/∂ζˉ (ζ)ζ−z dA(ζ),f(z) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{\partial D} \frac{f(\zeta)}{\zeta - z} \, d\zeta - \frac{1}{\pi} \iint_D \frac{\partial f / \partial \bar \zeta \, (\zeta)}{\zeta - z} \, dA(\zeta), where ∂f/∂ζˉ\partial f / \partial \bar \zeta is the Wirtinger derivative and dAdA is the area measure.

Remarks

Proof idea: apply Green's theorem, in the form ∮∂Ωg dζ=2i∬Ω∂g/∂ζˉ dA\oint_{\partial \Omega} g \, d\zeta = 2i \iint_\Omega \partial g / \partial \bar \zeta \, dA, to g(ζ)=f(ζ)/(ζ−z)g(\zeta) = f(\zeta)/(\zeta - z) on DD minus a small disc around zz. Since 1/(ζ−z)1/(\zeta - z) is holomorphic there, ∂g/∂ζˉ=(∂f/∂ζˉ)/(ζ−z)\partial g / \partial \bar \zeta = (\partial f / \partial \bar \zeta)/(\zeta - z); the small circle contributes 2πif(z)2\pi i f(z) in the limit. If ff is holomorphic, then ∂f/∂ζˉ=0\partial f / \partial \bar \zeta = 0 and the formula is Cauchy's integral formula. If ff has compact support in ℂ\C, the boundary term vanishes and f(z)=1π∬∂f/∂ζˉz−ζ dA(ζ)f(z) = \frac{1}{\pi} \iint \frac{\partial f / \partial \bar \zeta}{z - \zeta} \, dA(\zeta). One deduces from it that, for gg of class C1C^1 with compact support, u(z)=1π∬g(ζ)z−ζ dA(ζ)u(z) = \frac{1}{\pi} \iint \frac{g(\zeta)}{z - \zeta} \, dA(\zeta) solves ∂u/∂zˉ=g\partial u / \partial \bar z = g.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula is the basic tool for the inhomogeneous Cauchy–Riemann equation ∂u/∂zˉ=g\partial u / \partial \bar z = g. The kernel 1πz\frac{1}{\pi z} is a fundamental solution of the operator ∂/∂zˉ\partial / \partial \bar z. This is the starting point of the ∂ˉ\bar\partial method, of the theory of the Beltrami equation through the Cauchy and Beurling transforms, and of generalizations to several complex variables.
