Proof

We apply the mean value inequality to ff minus its linear part at aa.

  1. Let UU and ff be as in the statement, and let a∈Ua \in U. Write ∥B∥\norm{B} for the operator norm of a matrix BB.
  2. Since ff is of class C^1, it is differentiable at each point z∈Uz \in U, and Df(z)Df(z) is the Jacobian matrix of partial derivatives at zz.
  3. For a matrix B=(bij)B = (b_{ij}), the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality on each row gives ∥B∥≤(∑i,jbij2)1/2\norm{B} \le (\sum_{i, j} b_{ij}^2)^{1/2}.
  4. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. The partial derivatives of ff are continuous at aa. By step 3, there is r>0r > 0 such that the ball Br={z:∥z−a∥<r}B_r = \set{z : \norm{z - a} < r} lies in UU and ∥Df(z)−Df(a)∥≤ε\norm{Df(z) - Df(a)} \le \varepsilon for z∈Brz \in B_r.
  5. Let g(z)=f(z)−Df(a)zg(z) = f(z) - Df(a) z for z∈Uz \in U. A linear map is its own derivative, so gg is differentiable on UU with Dg(z)=Df(z)−Df(a)Dg(z) = Df(z) - Df(a).
  6. The ball BrB_r is convex, so it contains the segment between any two of its points. By the mean value inequality and step 4, ∥g(x)−g(y)∥≤ε∥x−y∥\norm{g(x) - g(y)} \le \varepsilon \norm{x - y} for x,y∈Brx, y \in B_r.
  7. Since g(x)−g(y)=f(x)−f(y)−Df(a)(x−y)g(x) - g(y) = f(x) - f(y) - Df(a)(x - y), this says ∥f(x)−f(y)−Df(a)(x−y)∥≤ε∥x−y∥\norm{f(x) - f(y) - Df(a)(x - y)} \le \varepsilon \norm{x - y} for x,y∈Brx, y \in B_r.
  8. If ∥(x,y)−(a,a)∥<r\norm{(x, y) - (a, a)} < r, then ∥x−a∥<r\norm{x - a} < r and ∥y−a∥<r\norm{y - a} < r, so x,y∈Brx, y \in B_r. For such pairs with x≠yx \ne y, step 7 gives ∥f(x)−f(y)−Df(a)(x−y)∥∥x−y∥≤ε\frac{\norm{f(x) - f(y) - Df(a)(x - y)}}{\norm{x - y}} \le \varepsilon.
  9. Since ε>0\varepsilon > 0 was arbitrary, this quotient tends to 00 as (x,y)→(a,a)(x, y) \to (a, a) with x≠yx \ne y. So ff is strictly differentiable at aa, with linear map Df(a)Df(a).

Idea

Subtracting the linear map Df(a)Df(a) leaves a function whose derivative is small near aa, because DfDf is continuous. The mean value inequality turns a small derivative into a small Lipschitz constant, and this is exactly the estimate that strict differentiability asks for.
