Definition
Let , let be an interval, and let be a regular differentiable curve of class . Let be its unit tangent vector. The curvature of at is If is parametrised by arc length , this reads .
Remarks
Example: the circle with has and , so and . Non-example: for the formula is not defined at , because ; the curve is not regular there. The curvature does not depend on the regular parametrisation chosen. In it is given by , where is the cross product. For a plane curve one also uses the signed curvature which is positive where the curve turns left; then .
