Statement

Let ρ ⁣:ℝ3×ℝ→ℝ\rho \colon \R^3 \times \R \to \R be a charge density and J ⁣:ℝ3×ℝ→ℝ3J \colon \R^3 \times \R \to \R^3 a current density. Let EE and BB be C2C^2 fields that solve Maxwell's equations with these sources. Then ρ\rho and JJ satisfy the continuity equation ∂ρ∂t+∇⋅J=0.\frac{\partial \rho}{\partial t} + \nabla \cdot J = 0. Consequently, for every bounded region VV with smooth boundary and outward unit normal nn, fixed in time, ddt∫Vρ dV=−∫∂VJ⋅n dA.\frac{d}{dt} \int_V \rho \, dV = - \int_{\partial V} J \cdot n \, dA.

Remarks

Take the divergence of the Ampère–Maxwell law ∇×B=μ0J+μ0ε0∂tE\nabla \times B = \mu_0 J + \mu_0 \varepsilon_0 \partial_t E. The left side vanishes because the divergence of a curl is zero, and Gauss's law ∇⋅E=ρ/ε0\nabla \cdot E = \rho / \varepsilon_0 turns the right side into μ0(∇⋅J+∂tρ)\mu_0 (\nabla \cdot J + \partial_t \rho). The integral form follows from the divergence theorem. The C2C^2 hypothesis lets the divergence pass through the time derivative and the mixed partial derivatives commute.

Physically, conservation of electric charge is an experimental law that holds independently of Maxwell's theory. The proposition shows that Maxwell's equations are consistent only with sources that conserve charge. Without the displacement term μ0ε0∂tE\mu_0 \varepsilon_0 \partial_t E, the same computation would force ∇⋅J=0\nabla \cdot J = 0, which fails for a charging capacitor.

Example: a charge qq moving with constant velocity vv has ρ=q δ(x−vt)\rho = q \, \delta(x - vt) and J=qv δ(x−vt)J = q v \, \delta(x - vt), and indeed ∂tρ=−v⋅∇ρ=−∇⋅J\partial_t \rho = -v \cdot \nabla \rho = -\nabla \cdot J in the sense of distributions.

Going deeper

For a student

The continuity equation is the local form of conservation, and it has the same shape as conservation of mass in fluid mechanics. In the covariant formulation it reads ∂μJμ=0\partial_\mu J^\mu = 0 for the four-current Jμ=(cρ,J)J^\mu = (c\rho, J), and it follows from the antisymmetry of the electromagnetic tensor. By Noether's theorem the conservation of charge also corresponds to the gauge symmetry of electromagnetism.
