Definition
Let and be twice continuously differentiable charge and current densities with . Assume that they vanish outside a fixed ball around the origin of . Let , be the retarded solution of Maxwell's equations with these sources, given by Jefimenko's equations. Let be the Poynting vector and let be the speed of light. For let be the sphere of radius about the origin, with outward unit normal . The radiated power of the sources at time is when the limit exists. The sources radiate at time if . The radiation field is the part of that decays like at distance ; this part alone determines .
Remarks
The shift follows the energy emitted at time as it travels out. Fields decaying like give flux of order , so only the part contributes. In Jefimenko's equations this part is formed by the terms with and .
Example: an electric dipole along a fixed axis radiates, with time-averaged power .
Non-example: static charges and steady currents do not radiate: their fields decay like , so . A single charge in uniform motion does not radiate either, although it lies outside this definition, since it does not stay in a fixed ball.
