Proof of the Lagrange multiplier rule with one constraint

Builds on Lagrange multipliersGradientLevel setLinear independenceC^k function characterised by continuous derivatives

Proof

We apply the theorem with several constraints to the single constraint g−cg - c.

  1. Let UU, n≥2n \ge 2, ff, gg, cc and aa be as in the statement. Define G=g−cG = g - c on UU. It is of class C^1, since gg is.
  2. The level set {x∈U:g(x)=c}\set{x \in U : g(x) = c} is the set M={x∈U:G(x)=0}M = \set{x \in U : G(x) = 0}.
  3. The gradient of GG is ∇G=∇g\nabla G = \nabla g, since cc is constant. So ∇G(a)≠0\nabla G(a) \ne 0.
  4. A single nonzero vector is linearly independent. Also m=1<nm = 1 < n, since n≥2n \ge 2.
  5. The restriction of ff to MM has a local extremum at aa. By the Lagrange multiplier theorem with m=1m = 1 and the constraint GG, there is a unique λ∈ℝ\lambda \in \R with ∇f(a)=λ∇G(a)\nabla f(a) = \lambda \nabla G(a).
  6. By step 3, this says ∇f(a)=λ∇g(a)\nabla f(a) = \lambda \nabla g(a), and λ\lambda is unique.

Idea

A level set g=cg = c is the zero set of g−cg - c, which has the same gradient as gg. One nonzero gradient is a linearly independent family, so the general theorem applies with one multiplier.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
