Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proof
Proof that the determinant is multilinear in the rows
Builds on DeterminantMultilinear map
Proof
- Let be row of for . By hypothesis, is also row of and of .
- By property 1 of the definition of the determinant, is a multilinear function of the rows.
- For a row , let have row equal to and row equal to for . Put . By step 2, is linear.
- Linearity of means for all rows and all .
- By step 1, , and .
- Since , step 4 gives .
Idea
This is property 1 of the definition, unpacked. Multilinear means linear in each row when the other rows are held fixed. The three matrices share all rows except row , so linearity in row is exactly the claim.
