Ordinary differential equations Proof

Proof of the Wronskian test for linear independence of solutions

Builds on WronskianHomogeneous linear equationSolution space of a homogeneous linear equation has dimension nSuperposition principleLinearity of differentiationA matrix is invertible iff its determinant is a unitAn injective endomorphism of a finite-dimensional space is surjectiveLinear independence

Proof

  1. Let SS be the space of solutions on II of the homogeneous linear equation. For x∈Ix \in I, let Φx(y)=(y(x),y′(x),…,y(n−1)(x))\Phi_x(y) = \left(y(x), y'(x), \dots, y^{(n-1)}(x)\right) for y∈Sy \in S.
  2. By the dimension theorem for the solution space, Φx:S→ℝn\Phi_x : S \to \R^n is a linear bijection for each x∈Ix \in I.
  3. For x∈Ix \in I, let M(x)M(x) be the n×nn \times n matrix whose column jj is Φx(yj)\Phi_x(y_j). By the definition of the Wronskian, W(x)=det⁡M(x)W(x) = \det M(x).
  4. For c=(c1,…,cn)∈ℝnc = (c_1, \dots, c_n) \in \R^n, let yc=∑jcjyjy_c = \sum_j c_j y_j. By the superposition principle, yc∈Sy_c \in S. By linearity of Φx\Phi_x, Φx(yc)=M(x) c\Phi_x(y_c) = M(x)\, c.
  5. (a) implies (c). Assume (a), and suppose W(x)=0W(x) = 0 for some x∈Ix \in I. Then M(x)M(x) is not invertible.
  6. The linear map c↦M(x)cc \mapsto M(x) c of ℝn\R^n is then not bijective. By the injective endomorphism theorem, it is not injective. So there is c≠0c \ne 0 with M(x)c=0M(x) c = 0.
  7. By step 4, Φx(yc)=0\Phi_x(y_c) = 0. Since Φx\Phi_x is injective, yc=0y_c = 0 on II.
  8. So ∑jcjyj=0\sum_j c_j y_j = 0 on II with c≠0c \ne 0. This contradicts the linear independence in (a). Hence W(x)≠0W(x) \ne 0 for each x∈Ix \in I.
  9. (c) implies (b). The interval II is not empty, so take any x0∈Ix_0 \in I.
  10. (b) implies (a). Let W(x0)≠0W(x_0) \ne 0, and let c∈ℝnc \in \R^n with ∑jcjyj=0\sum_j c_j y_j = 0 on II. So yc=0y_c = 0, and all its derivatives vanish on II, by linearity of differentiation.
  11. In particular M(x0) c=Φx0(yc)=0M(x_0)\, c = \Phi_{x_0}(y_c) = 0, by step 4. Since det⁡M(x0)=W(x0)≠0\det M(x_0) = W(x_0) \ne 0, the matrix M(x0)M(x_0) is invertible.
  12. Hence c=M(x0)−1M(x0) c=0c = M(x_0)^{-1} M(x_0)\, c = 0. So y1,…,yny_1, \dots, y_n are linearly independent on II.
  13. The implications (a) to (c), (c) to (b) and (b) to (a) show that the three conditions are equivalent.

Idea

The columns of the Wronskian matrix at xx are the initial values of the solutions at xx. A solution is determined by its initial values at any one point. So a dependence among the columns at one point is a dependence among the solutions on all of II.
