Proof that the exponential function is its own derivative, by term-by-term differentiation
Builds on Exponential functionPower seriesThe exponential series has infinite radius of convergencePower series are differentiable inside the radius of convergenceFactorial
Proof
We differentiate the power series term by term.
- By definition, the exponential function is the power series with center and .
- Its radius of convergence is , by the exponential series has infinite radius of convergence. So the interval is all of .
- By the theorem that power series are differentiable inside the radius of convergence, is differentiable on . For every real , .
- For , the definition of the factorial gives . So .
- By steps 3 and 4, and the index change , .
Idea
Differentiating gives , the previous term of the same series. So differentiating the whole series shifts it by one place and returns the same series. The infinite radius of convergence makes term-by-term differentiation valid everywhere.
