Statement
Let and let be a bounded open set.
- Let . There is a constant such that for all in the Sobolev space .
- Assume moreover that is connected and has boundary, and let . There is a constant such that where is the mean value of on .
Remarks
For part 1 one can take inside a slab . For smooth with compact support, , and Hölder's inequality gives ; density extends this to . Part 2 is proved by contradiction. If it failed, there would be functions with mean , norm and gradients tending to . The Rellich–Kondrachov theorem would give a limit with zero gradient, hence constant on the connected set . This limit has mean , so it is , which contradicts the norm .
The hypotheses are needed. In part 2 one must subtract the mean, since constant functions have zero gradient. Connectedness is needed: on two disjoint intervals, a function equal to on one and on the other has mean , zero gradient and nonzero norm.

For a student
The inequality shows that is a norm on equivalent to the full norm. This is exactly the coercivity needed to apply the Lax–Milgram theorem to the Dirichlet problem for . The best constant for in part 1 is , where is the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of on .
