Definition

Let II be an open interval containing 00, let m>0m > 0, and let V ⁣:I→ℝV \colon I \to \R be a smooth function with V(0)=0V(0) = 0, V′(0)=0V'(0) = 0 and V′′(0)=k>0V''(0) = k > 0. The oscillator with mass mm and potential VV is the ordinary differential equation m x′′(t)=−V′(x(t))m \, x''(t) = - V'(x(t)) for the displacement x(t)∈Ix(t) \in I. It is anharmonic if VV is not the quadratic function x↦k2x2x \mapsto \frac{k}{2} x^2 on II, that is, if the restoring force −V′(x)-V'(x) is not linear in xx.

Remarks

The pendulum equation θ′′+gℓsin⁡θ=0\theta'' + \frac{g}{\ell} \sin \theta = 0 is anharmonic: here m=1m = 1 and V(θ)=gℓ(1−cos⁡θ)V(\theta) = \frac{g}{\ell} (1 - \cos \theta) on I=(−π,π)I = (-\pi, \pi), which is not quadratic since V(θ)=g2ℓθ2−g24ℓθ4+O(θ6)V(\theta) = \frac{g}{2\ell} \theta^2 - \frac{g}{24 \ell} \theta^4 + O(\theta^6). The undamped, unforced Duffing equation x′′+αx+βx3=0x'' + \alpha x + \beta x^3 = 0 with α>0\alpha > 0 and β≠0\beta \neq 0 is anharmonic too, with V(x)=α2x2+β4x4V(x) = \frac{\alpha}{2} x^2 + \frac{\beta}{4} x^4. The harmonic oscillator mx′′+kx=0m x'' + k x = 0 is not anharmonic: its potential is exactly k2x2\frac{k}{2} x^2.

The terms of order three and higher in the Taylor expansion of VV at 00 are called the anharmonic terms. Solutions of small amplitude oscillate with angular frequency close to k/m\sqrt{k/m}, and in general the period depends on the amplitude.
