Simple harmonic motion

Builds on Harmonic oscillator

Definition

A function x ⁣:ℝ→ℝx \colon \R \to \R describes simple harmonic motion when there are constants A>0A > 0, ω>0\omega > 0 and φ∈ℝ\varphi \in \R such that x(t)=Acos⁡(ωt+φ)for all t∈ℝ.x(t) = A \cos(\omega t + \varphi) \quad \text{for all } t \in \R. The number AA is the amplitude, ω\omega is the angular frequency, φ\varphi is the phase, and T=2π/ωT = 2\pi / \omega is the period.

Remarks

Equivalently, xx is a nonzero solution of x¨+ω2x=0\ddot x + \omega^2 x = 0 for some ω>0\omega > 0, the equation of the harmonic oscillator. For a mass m>0m > 0 on a spring of stiffness k>0k > 0, the frequency is ω=k/m\omega = \sqrt{k/m}.

Example: x(t)=3sin⁡(2t)=3cos⁡(2t−π/2)x(t) = 3 \sin(2t) = 3 \cos(2t - \pi/2) is simple harmonic motion with A=3A = 3, ω=2\omega = 2 and period π\pi. Check: x¨=−12sin⁡(2t)=−4x\ddot x = -12 \sin(2t) = -4 x.

Non-example: x(t)=e−tcos⁡tx(t) = e^{-t} \cos t solves x¨+2x˙+2x=0\ddot x + 2 \dot x + 2 x = 0, but its amplitude decays, so it is not of the form Acos⁡(ωt+φ)A \cos(\omega t + \varphi) with constant AA; it is a damped oscillation.
