Real functions Proof

Proof of the formula for the derivative of a polynomial

Builds on Power ruleLinearity of differentiationDerivativeEpsilon-delta definition of a limitDifferentiable function

Proof

We argue by induction on nn, the largest index of the coefficients.

  1. Base case n=0n = 0. Then p(x)=a0p(x) = a_0 is constant. For h≠0h \ne 0, its difference quotient at xx is a0−a0h=0\frac{a_0 - a_0}{h} = 0.
  2. A function that is constantly 00 near 00 has limit 00 at 00, by the epsilon-delta form of limits. So pp has derivative 00 at every xx.
  3. The claimed formula for n=0n = 0 is the empty sum ∑k=10kakxk−1=0\sum_{k=1}^{0} k a_k x^{k-1} = 0. So the base case holds.
  4. Induction step. Assume the claim for all polynomials ∑k=0nakxk\sum_{k=0}^{n} a_k x^k, for some n≥0n \ge 0. Let p(x)=∑k=0n+1akxkp(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{n+1} a_k x^k.
  5. Write p=r+an+1sp = r + a_{n+1} s, where r(x)=∑k=0nakxkr(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} a_k x^k and s(x)=xn+1s(x) = x^{n+1}.
  6. By the induction hypothesis, rr is differentiable on ℝ\R with r′(x)=∑k=1nkakxk−1r'(x) = \sum_{k=1}^{n} k a_k x^{k-1}.
  7. By the power rule with exponent n+1≥1n + 1 \ge 1, ss is differentiable on ℝ\R with s′(x)=(n+1)xns'(x) = (n + 1) x^{n}.
  8. By the linearity of differentiation with coefficients 11 and an+1a_{n+1}, pp is differentiable at every xx, and p′(x)=∑k=1nkakxk−1+(n+1)an+1xn=∑k=1n+1kakxk−1.p'(x) = \sum_{k=1}^{n} k a_k x^{k-1} + (n + 1) a_{n+1} x^{n} = \sum_{k=1}^{n+1} k a_k x^{k-1}.
  9. This is the claim for n+1n + 1. By induction, it holds for every nn.

Idea

A polynomial is built by adding one term akxka_k x^k at a time. The power rule differentiates each term, and linearity lets us differentiate the sum term by term.
