Special functions Proof

Proof of the power-reduction formulas

Builds on Angle addition formulasPythagorean trigonometric identity

Proof

  1. Let xx be real. The addition formula for cosine with y=xy = x gives cos⁡2x=cos⁡xcos⁡x−sin⁡xsin⁡x=cos⁡2x−sin⁡2x\cos 2x = \cos x \cos x - \sin x \sin x = \cos^2 x - \sin^2 x.
  2. By the Pythagorean identity, sin⁡2x=1−cos⁡2x\sin^2 x = 1 - \cos^2 x. Substituting in step 1 gives cos⁡2x=2cos⁡2x−1\cos 2x = 2 \cos^2 x - 1.
  3. Solving for cos⁡2x\cos^2 x gives cos⁡2x=1+cos⁡2x2\cos^2 x = \frac{1 + \cos 2x}{2}.
  4. Also by the Pythagorean identity, cos⁡2x=1−sin⁡2x\cos^2 x = 1 - \sin^2 x. Substituting in step 1 gives cos⁡2x=1−2sin⁡2x\cos 2x = 1 - 2 \sin^2 x.
  5. Solving for sin⁡2x\sin^2 x gives sin⁡2x=1−cos⁡2x2\sin^2 x = \frac{1 - \cos 2x}{2}.

Idea

The double angle formula writes cos⁡2x\cos 2x as cos⁡2x−sin⁡2x\cos^2 x - \sin^2 x. The Pythagorean identity lets us remove either square, and then we solve for the other one.
