Proof

Let cc, rr, RR, AA and ff be as in the statement. For r<ρ<Rr < \rho < R, let CρC_\rho be the circle ∣w−c∣=ρ\abs{w - c} = \rho. All integrals over CρC_\rho are circle integrals. For n∈ℤn \in \Z and r<ρ<Rr < \rho < R, let In(ρ)=12πi∮Cρf(w)(w−c)n+1 dwI_n(\rho) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{C_\rho} \frac{f(w)}{(w - c)^{n+1}} \, dw.

Lemma: integrals over circles do not depend on the radius.

  1. Let φ\varphi be holomorphic on the annulus AA, and let J(ρ)=∮Cρφ(w) dw=∫02πφ(c+ρeiθ) iρeiθ dθJ(\rho) = \oint_{C_\rho} \varphi(w) \, dw = \int_0^{2\pi} \varphi(c + \rho e^{i\theta}) \, i \rho e^{i\theta} \, d\theta.
  2. By the definition of complex differentiability, as in the real chain rule, ∂ρφ(c+ρeiθ)=φ′(c+ρeiθ)eiθ\partial_\rho \varphi(c + \rho e^{i\theta}) = \varphi'(c + \rho e^{i\theta}) e^{i\theta} and ∂θφ(c+ρeiθ)=φ′(c+ρeiθ)iρeiθ\partial_\theta \varphi(c + \rho e^{i\theta}) = \varphi'(c + \rho e^{i\theta}) i \rho e^{i\theta}.
  3. Let Φ(ρ,θ)=φ(c+ρeiθ)iρeiθ\Phi(\rho, \theta) = \varphi(c + \rho e^{i\theta}) i \rho e^{i\theta} and Gρ(θ)=φ(c+ρeiθ)ρeiθG_\rho(\theta) = \varphi(c + \rho e^{i\theta}) \rho e^{i\theta}. By step 2, ρ ∂ρΦ=∂θGρ\rho \, \partial_\rho \Phi = \partial_\theta G_\rho. Both sides equal iφ′ρ2e2iθ+iφρeiθi \varphi' \rho^2 e^{2i\theta} + i \varphi \rho e^{i\theta}.
  4. By holomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable, φ′\varphi' is holomorphic, hence continuous. So ∂ρΦ\partial_\rho \Phi is continuous on [ρa,ρb]×[0,2π][\rho_a, \rho_b] \times [0, 2\pi] for each r<ρa<ρb<Rr < \rho_a < \rho_b < R.
  5. By differentiation under the integral sign for the real and imaginary parts, and by the fundamental theorem of calculus, J′(ρ)=1ρ(Gρ(2π)−Gρ(0))=0J'(\rho) = \frac{1}{\rho} \bigl( G_\rho(2\pi) - G_\rho(0) \bigr) = 0.
  6. By the mean value theorem for the real and imaginary parts of JJ, JJ is constant on (r,R)(r, R).
  7. Apply this to φ(w)=f(w)/(w−c)n+1\varphi(w) = f(w)/(w - c)^{n+1}, which is holomorphic on AA since c∉Ac \notin A. So In(ρ)I_n(\rho) does not depend on ρ\rho. Write an=In(ρ)a_n = I_n(\rho).

Existence.

  1. Fix z∈Az \in A and choose ρ1,ρ2\rho_1, \rho_2 with r<ρ1<∣z−c∣<ρ2<Rr < \rho_1 < \abs{z - c} < \rho_2 < R.
  2. Let q(w)=f(w)−f(z)w−zq(w) = \frac{f(w) - f(z)}{w - z} for w∈Aw \in A, w≠zw \ne z, and q(z)=f′(z)q(z) = f'(z). It is holomorphic on A∖{z}A \setminus \set{z} as a quotient.
  3. Near zz: on a disc around zz inside AA, f(w)=∑k≥0bk(w−z)kf(w) = \sum_{k \ge 0} b_k (w - z)^k by holomorphic functions are analytic, with b0=f(z)b_0 = f(z) and b1=f′(z)b_1 = f'(z) by term-by-term differentiation.
  4. So q(w)=∑k≥1bk(w−z)k−1q(w) = \sum_{k \ge 1} b_k (w - z)^{k-1} on that disc. This series converges at each point of the disc, so its radius of convergence is at least the radius of the disc.
  5. Indeed, a power series that converges at a point has bounded terms there. By step 11 and power series are holomorphic, qq is holomorphic near zz, hence on AA.
  6. By the lemma, ∮Cρ2q=∮Cρ1q\oint_{C_{\rho_2}} q = \oint_{C_{\rho_1}} q.
  7. By Cauchy's integral formula for the constant function 11, ∮Cρ2dww−z=2πi\oint_{C_{\rho_2}} \frac{dw}{w - z} = 2\pi i, since ∣z−c∣<ρ2\abs{z - c} < \rho_2.
  8. The function w↦1/(w−z)w \mapsto 1/(w - z) is holomorphic on the disc ∣w−c∣<∣z−c∣\abs{w - c} < \abs{z - c}, which contains Cρ1C_{\rho_1}. By primitives on a disc and the fundamental theorem of contour integration, ∮Cρ1dww−z=0\oint_{C_{\rho_1}} \frac{dw}{w - z} = 0.
  9. Writing qq out in step 13 and using steps 14 and 15 gives f(z)=12πi∮Cρ2f(w)w−z dw−12πi∮Cρ1f(w)w−z dw.f(z) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{C_{\rho_2}} \frac{f(w)}{w - z} \, dw - \frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{C_{\rho_1}} \frac{f(w)}{w - z} \, dw.
  10. Let w∈Cρ2w \in C_{\rho_2} and t=(z−c)/(w−c)t = (z - c)/(w - c), so ∣t∣=q2=∣z−c∣/ρ2<1\abs{t} = q_2 = \abs{z - c}/\rho_2 < 1. By the finite geometric sum, 1w−z−∑n=0N(z−c)n(w−c)n+1=tN+1w−z\frac{1}{w - z} - \sum_{n=0}^{N} \frac{(z - c)^n}{(w - c)^{n+1}} = \frac{t^{N+1}}{w - z}.
  11. Let M2M_2 be the maximum of ∣f∣\abs{f} on Cρ2C_{\rho_2}, which exists by attainment of bounds. Also ∣w−z∣≥ρ2−∣z−c∣\abs{w - z} \ge \rho_2 - \abs{z - c} on Cρ2C_{\rho_2}.
  12. By the estimation lemma and step 17, ∣12πi∮Cρ2f(w)w−z dw−∑n=0Nan(z−c)n∣≤ρ2M2 q2N+1ρ2−∣z−c∣\abs{\frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{C_{\rho_2}} \frac{f(w)}{w - z} \, dw - \sum_{n=0}^{N} a_n (z - c)^n} \le \frac{\rho_2 M_2 \, q_2^{N+1}}{\rho_2 - \abs{z - c}}. Here we used step 7 to write In(ρ2)=anI_n(\rho_2) = a_n.
  13. As N→∞N \to \infty the bound tends to 00. So the first integral in step 16 equals ∑n≥0an(z−c)n\sum_{n \ge 0} a_n (z - c)^n.
  14. Let w∈Cρ1w \in C_{\rho_1} and s=(w−c)/(z−c)s = (w - c)/(z - c), so ∣s∣=q1=ρ1/∣z−c∣<1\abs{s} = q_1 = \rho_1/\abs{z - c} < 1. Then −1w−z−∑m=0N(w−c)m(z−c)m+1=sN+1z−w-\frac{1}{w - z} - \sum_{m=0}^{N} \frac{(w - c)^m}{(z - c)^{m+1}} = \frac{s^{N+1}}{z - w}, and ∣z−w∣≥∣z−c∣−ρ1\abs{z - w} \ge \abs{z - c} - \rho_1.
  15. As in steps 18 to 20, −12πi∮Cρ1f(w)w−z dw=∑m≥0I−m−1(ρ1)(z−c)−m−1=∑n≥1a−n(z−c)−n-\frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{C_{\rho_1}} \frac{f(w)}{w - z} \, dw = \sum_{m \ge 0} I_{-m-1}(\rho_1) (z - c)^{-m-1} = \sum_{n \ge 1} a_{-n} (z - c)^{-n}.
  16. By steps 16, 20 and 22, both parts of the Laurent series ∑n∈ℤan(z−c)n\sum_{n \in \Z} a_n (z - c)^n converge, and its sum is f(z)f(z). The coefficients are an=In(ρ)a_n = I_n(\rho) for any ρ∈(r,R)\rho \in (r, R), by step 7.

Absolute and uniform convergence.

  1. For r<ρ<Rr < \rho < R, let M(ρ)M(\rho) be the maximum of ∣f∣\abs{f} on CρC_\rho. By the estimation lemma, ∣an∣≤12π⋅2πρ⋅M(ρ)ρ−n−1=M(ρ)ρ−n\abs{a_n} \le \frac{1}{2\pi} \cdot 2\pi\rho \cdot M(\rho) \rho^{-n-1} = M(\rho) \rho^{-n} for each n∈ℤn \in \Z.
  2. Let r<σ1≤σ2<Rr < \sigma_1 \le \sigma_2 < R, and choose s1∈(r,σ1)s_1 \in (r, \sigma_1) and s2∈(σ2,R)s_2 \in (\sigma_2, R). Let σ1≤∣z−c∣≤σ2\sigma_1 \le \abs{z - c} \le \sigma_2.
  3. By step 24, ∣an(z−c)n∣≤M(s2)(σ2/s2)n\abs{a_n (z - c)^n} \le M(s_2) (\sigma_2/s_2)^n for n≥0n \ge 0, and ∣a−n(z−c)−n∣≤M(s1)(s1/σ1)n\abs{a_{-n} (z - c)^{-n}} \le M(s_1) (s_1/\sigma_1)^n for n≥1n \ge 1.
  4. Both bounds are terms of convergent geometric series. By the Weierstrass M-test, applied to real and imaginary parts, both parts converge absolutely and uniformly on the closed annulus.
  5. Each z∈Az \in A lies in such a closed annulus, with σ1=σ2=∣z−c∣\sigma_1 = \sigma_2 = \abs{z - c}. So the series converges absolutely on AA.

Uniqueness.

  1. Let ∑n∈ℤbn(z−c)n\sum_{n \in \Z} b_n (z - c)^n be a Laurent series that converges to f(z)f(z) at each z∈Az \in A. Fix ρ∈(r,R)\rho \in (r, R), s1∈(r,ρ)s_1 \in (r, \rho) and s2∈(ρ,R)s_2 \in (\rho, R).
  2. Convergence at points with ∣z−c∣=s2\abs{z - c} = s_2 and ∣z−c∣=s1\abs{z - c} = s_1 makes the terms bounded there: ∣bn∣s2n≤B2\abs{b_n} s_2^n \le B_2 for n≥0n \ge 0 and ∣b−n∣s1−n≤B1\abs{b_{-n}} s_1^{-n} \le B_1 for n≥1n \ge 1.
  3. On CρC_\rho, this gives ∣bn(z−c)n∣≤B2(ρ/s2)n\abs{b_n (z - c)^n} \le B_2 (\rho/s_2)^n and ∣b−n(z−c)−n∣≤B1(s1/ρ)n\abs{b_{-n} (z - c)^{-n}} \le B_1 (s_1/\rho)^n. As in step 27, both parts converge uniformly on CρC_\rho.
  4. Fix k∈ℤk \in \Z. Multiplying by (z−c)−k−1(z - c)^{-k-1}, which has modulus ρ−k−1\rho^{-k-1} on CρC_\rho, keeps the convergence uniform. By the estimation lemma applied to the tails, we may integrate term by term: ak=12πi∮Cρf(z)(z−c)k+1 dz=∑n∈ℤbn12πi∮Cρ(z−c)n−k−1 dz.a_k = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{C_\rho} \frac{f(z)}{(z - c)^{k+1}} \, dz = \sum_{n \in \Z} b_n \frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_{C_\rho} (z - c)^{n - k - 1} \, dz.
  5. For m∈ℤm \in \Z, ∮Cρ(z−c)m dz=iρm+1∫02πei(m+1)θ dθ\oint_{C_\rho} (z - c)^m \, dz = i \rho^{m+1} \int_0^{2\pi} e^{i(m+1)\theta} \, d\theta. This is 2πi2\pi i if m=−1m = -1.
  6. If m≠−1m \ne -1, the integrand has the primitive ei(m+1)θ/(i(m+1))e^{i(m+1)\theta}/(i(m+1)), which takes equal values at 00 and 2π2\pi by periodicity. So the integral is 00.
  7. By steps 32 to 34, only the term n=kn = k survives, and ak=bka_k = b_k. So the coefficients are unique.

Idea

Cauchy's integral formula on the region between two circles writes f(z)f(z) as an integral over the outer circle minus an integral over the inner circle. On the outer circle 1/(w−z)1/(w - z) expands in powers of z−cz - c, and on the inner circle in powers of 1/(z−c)1/(z - c). Integrating term by term gives the two halves of the Laurent series. Integrating a Laurent series against (z−c)−k−1(z - c)^{-k-1} over a circle picks out the single coefficient aka_k, which gives uniqueness.
