Proof of the Leibniz formula from the defining properties of the determinant
Builds on DeterminantDeterminant is multilinear in the rowsDeterminant of a matrix with two equal rowsPermuting rows multiplies the determinant by the signDeterminant of the identity matrixPermutationIdentity matrix
Proof
We expand each row in the standard basis and use the properties from the definition of the determinant.
- Let be the rows of the identity matrix . So has entry in place and elsewhere.
- Row of is .
- For a map , let be the matrix whose row is .
- Apply multilinearity in row to the sum of step 2. Then apply it in row to each resulting term, and so on up to row .
- This gives . The sum runs over all maps of step 3.
- If is not injective, then for some . Then rows and of are equal, so by the rule for two equal rows.
- An injective map from the finite set to itself is a bijection. So the remaining maps are exactly the permutations .
- For , row of is row of . By the rule for permuting rows, .
- By the determinant of the identity, . So .
- Putting steps 5 to 9 together, .
Idea
Each row is a combination of the standard rows, so multilinearity breaks into simple pieces. A piece with a repeated standard row is zero. The others are row permutations of the identity, whose determinant is the sign of the permutation.
