Proof
We argue by induction on . Steps 2 to 11 show that has an eigenvalue in the scalar field.
- Let be or . For , let be the following claim. Let be an -dimensional inner product space over , and let be self-adjoint. Then has an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors of .
- Base case . Then , and the empty family is an orthonormal basis. It vacuously consists of eigenvectors. So holds.
- Let , and let and be as in , with inner product . If , then is algebraically closed by the fundamental theorem of algebra. So has an eigenvalue.
- Now let . Take an orthonormal basis of , and set . By the formula for coordinates, .
- Over , conjugate symmetry is symmetry. So self-adjointness gives . Let , a real symmetric matrix.
- View as a complex matrix. Since , the existence of an eigenvalue over , applied to , gives and with and .
- Set . Since , we get .
- Since the are real, . Exchanging the names and and using gives . So is real.
- The number is real and positive, as . By step 7, is real.
- Write with . Since and are real, comparing real and imaginary parts of gives and .
- As , one of is nonzero; call it . Set , which is nonzero. By step 4, . So is an eigenvalue of .
- In both cases, let be an eigenvalue of and an eigenvector for it. By the theorem on eigenvalues, is real.
- Set . Then and .
- Let be the orthogonal complement of the line . A vector lies in if and only if , by linearity in the first argument and conjugate symmetry.
- By the dimension formula, .
- Let . Then , as is real. So .
- The restriction of to is an inner product. Let be . It maps into by step 16, and it is linear since is.
- For , . So is self-adjoint on .
- By , has an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors of . Each is nonzero and satisfies for some , so it is an eigenvector of .
- Put . Each with lies in , so , and . With steps 13 and 19, is orthonormal.
- An orthonormal family is linearly independent. These vectors in the -dimensional space therefore form a basis.
- So is an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors of . This proves , and by induction holds for all .
- The eigenvalues of these eigenvectors are real, by the theorem on eigenvalues.
Idea
Find one unit eigenvector , then look at the hyperplane orthogonal to it. Self-adjointness makes this hyperplane invariant, and stays self-adjoint there, so induction gives the rest of the basis. Over , the eigenvalue comes from viewing the symmetric matrix over : its complex eigenvalues are real, so a real eigenvector exists.
