Proof that a bounded derivative on a convex set implies Lipschitz
Builds on Mean value inequalityConvex setDifferentiable function of several variablesLipschitz condition
Proof
We apply the mean value inequality to each pair of points of .
- Let , , and be as in the statement, and let .
- For , the point equals .
- Since is convex, step 2 shows that the segment lies in . As , it lies in .
- By hypothesis, for each , so in particular for each .
- The map is differentiable on the open set . By steps 3 and 4 and the mean value inequality, .
- Since were arbitrary, is Lipschitz on C with constant .
Idea
Convexity puts the whole segment between two points of inside . On that segment the derivative is bounded by , so the mean value inequality bounds the change of by times the distance.
