Definition
Let be an open interval and let .
- The function is of class on if it is continuous on .
- Let be an integer. The function is of class on if the higher derivatives exist on . Moreover must be continuous on .
- The function is of class on if it is of class for every .
The set of functions of class on is written .
Remarks
The classes are nested: . The class is the class of continuously differentiable functions, and is the class of smooth functions. The class of real analytic functions lies inside . For functions of several variables, is defined by continuous partial derivatives up to order ; see the characterisation by derivatives.
Example: on is of class . Its derivative is , which is continuous. It is not of class , because is not differentiable at . More generally, is of class but not of class .
Non-example: for , with , is differentiable on but not of class . Its derivative is for and , and has no limit at .
