Proof
We use Fubini's theorem and the fundamental theorem of calculus on each term.
- Since is of class on an open set containing , the partial derivatives and are continuous on .
- By linearity of the double integral, . This is the integral of the divergence of .
- By Fubini's theorem for the continuous function , .
- Fix . The function is continuous on , and its derivative on is the continuous function .
- By the fundamental theorem of calculus, . So .
- By Fubini's theorem in the other order, .
- For fixed , the fundamental theorem of calculus gives . So .
- Adding steps 5 and 7 with step 2 gives the stated formula.
Idea
On a rectangle, each part of the divergence can be integrated first in its own variable. The fundamental theorem of calculus turns that inner integral into a difference of boundary values. So the integral of only sees the right and left sides, and the integral of only sees the top and bottom sides.
