Functions of a complex variable Proof
Proof of the identity theorem by connectedness
Builds on Domain in the complex planeHolomorphic functionIsolated zeros theoremConnected space
Proof
- Let , , , and be as in the statement. Let . It is holomorphic on , and is its set of zeros.
- Let be the set of such that on some open disc with center contained in .
- is open. If on and , then on the disc with center and radius .
- is open. Let . By the isolated zeros theorem at , case 1 fails, so case 2 holds.
- After shrinking the radius of case 2, there is with and for .
- Let satisfy . Since , . Also . So the disc of step 5 lies in .
- . By assumption, each disc with center contains a point with . So case 2 of the isolated zeros theorem fails at .
- Hence case 1 holds at : on a disc with center . Shrinking it so that it lies in shows .
- By steps 3, 4 and 6, with both sets open and disjoint. Since the domain is connected, one of them is empty.
- By step 8, is not empty. So , and on . That is, for each .
Idea
The set of points near which vanishes identically is open by definition. By the isolated zeros theorem its complement is also open, and the accumulation point lies in it. A connected set cannot split into two disjoint nonempty open parts, so the set is all of .
