Proof

We compare ff near aa with its second-order Taylor polynomial.

  1. Let UU, ff, aa and the Hessian matrix H=Hf(a)H = H_f(a) be as in the statement. Since ff is of class C^2, Schwarz's theorem shows that HH is symmetric. Its quadratic form Q(h)=h𝖳HhQ(h) = h^{\mathsf{T}} H h is as in the definition of definite forms.
  2. Since ∇f(a)=0\nabla f(a) = 0, the second-order Taylor expansion gives f(a+h)−f(a)=12Q(h)+R(h)f(a + h) - f(a) = \tfrac{1}{2} Q(h) + R(h) for a+h∈Ua + h \in U, with R(h)/∥h∥2→0R(h) / \norm{h}^2 \to 0 as h→0h \to 0.
  3. Part 1. Assume that HH is positive definite. Let S={h∈ℝn:∥h∥=1}S = \set{h \in \R^n : \norm{h} = 1} be the unit sphere. It is closed and bounded, so it is compact by the Heine–Borel theorem.
  4. The function QQ is a polynomial in the coordinates of hh, so it is continuous. By the extreme value theorem, there is h0∈Sh_0 \in S with Q(h)≥Q(h0)Q(h) \ge Q(h_0) for all h∈Sh \in S. Let m=Q(h0)m = Q(h_0). Then m>0m > 0, since h0≠0h_0 \ne 0 and QQ is positive definite.
  5. For h≠0h \ne 0, the vector h/∥h∥h / \norm{h} lies in SS, and Q(h)=∥h∥2Q(h/∥h∥)Q(h) = \norm{h}^2 Q(h / \norm{h}). So Q(h)≥m∥h∥2Q(h) \ge m \norm{h}^2 for every h∈ℝnh \in \R^n.
  6. By step 2, there is δ>0\delta > 0 such that a+h∈Ua + h \in U and ∣R(h)∣<m4∥h∥2\abs{R(h)} < \tfrac{m}{4} \norm{h}^2 whenever 0<∥h∥<δ0 < \norm{h} < \delta.
  7. For such hh, steps 2, 5 and 6 give f(a+h)−f(a)≥m2∥h∥2−m4∥h∥2=m4∥h∥2>0f(a + h) - f(a) \ge \tfrac{m}{2} \norm{h}^2 - \tfrac{m}{4} \norm{h}^2 = \tfrac{m}{4} \norm{h}^2 > 0.
  8. So f(x)>f(a)f(x) > f(a) for all x∈Ux \in U with 0<∥x−a∥<δ0 < \norm{x - a} < \delta. This means that ff has a strict local minimum at aa.
  9. Part 2. Assume that HH is negative definite. The function −f-f is of class C2C^2, has gradient 00 at aa, and has Hessian −H-H, which is positive definite.
  10. By Part 1, −f-f has a strict local minimum at aa. So ff has a strict local maximum at aa.
  11. Part 3. Let λ>0\lambda > 0 and μ<0\mu < 0 be eigenvalues of HH. The real matrices H−λIH - \lambda I and H−μIH - \mu I are singular. So there are real eigenvectors v,w∈ℝnv, w \in \R^n with Hv=λvH v = \lambda v and Hw=μwH w = \mu w. Then Q(v)=λ∥v∥2>0Q(v) = \lambda \norm{v}^2 > 0 and Q(w)=μ∥w∥2<0Q(w) = \mu \norm{w}^2 < 0.
  12. For real t≠0t \ne 0 small enough that a+tv∈Ua + t v \in U, step 2 gives f(a+tv)−f(a)t2∥v∥2=λ2+R(tv)∥tv∥2\frac{f(a + t v) - f(a)}{t^2 \norm{v}^2} = \frac{\lambda}{2} + \frac{R(t v)}{\norm{t v}^2}.
  13. As t→0t \to 0, the right side tends to λ/2>0\lambda / 2 > 0. So there is η>0\eta > 0 with f(a+tv)>f(a)f(a + t v) > f(a) for 0<∣t∣<η0 < \abs{t} < \eta.
  14. In the same way, using ww and μ<0\mu < 0, there is η′>0\eta' > 0 with f(a+tw)<f(a)f(a + t w) < f(a) for 0<∣t∣<η′0 < \abs{t} < \eta'.
  15. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. By steps 13 and 14, the ball of radius ε\varepsilon around aa contains a point x∈Ux \in U with f(x)>f(a)f(x) > f(a). It also contains a point y∈Uy \in U with f(y)<f(a)f(y) < f(a).
  16. So aa is neither a local maximum nor a local minimum of ff. Since ∇f(a)=0\nabla f(a) = 0, the point aa is a saddle point of ff.

Idea

At a critical point the linear term of the Taylor expansion is zero, so f(a+h)−f(a)f(a + h) - f(a) is 12h𝖳Hh\tfrac{1}{2} h^{\mathsf{T}} H h plus a remainder that is small compared to ∥h∥2\norm{h}^2. A positive definite form is at least m∥h∥2m \norm{h}^2, by compactness of the sphere, so it wins against the remainder. For an indefinite Hessian, moving along eigenvectors makes ff go up in one direction and down in another.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
