Definition

Let 2ω2^\omega be Cantor space, the set of infinite binary sequences. For a finite binary string σ\sigma of length ∣σ∣\abs{\sigma}, let [σ]⊆2ω[\sigma] \subseteq 2^\omega be the set of sequences that begin with σ\sigma. Let μ\mu be the uniform measure on 2ω2^\omega, with μ([σ])=2−∣σ∣\mu([\sigma]) = 2^{-\abs{\sigma}}. A Martin-Löf test is a sequence (Un)n∈ℕ(U_n)_{n \in \N} of subsets of 2ω2^\omega such that:

  1. there is a computably enumerable set WW of pairs (n,σ)(n, \sigma) with Un=⋃{[σ]:(n,σ)∈W}U_n = \bigcup \set{[\sigma] : (n, \sigma) \in W} for every nn;
  2. μ(Un)≤2−n\mu(U_n) \le 2^{-n} for every nn.

A sequence X∈2ωX \in 2^\omega is Martin-Löf random, or algorithmically random, if X∉⋂nUnX \notin \bigcap_n U_n for every Martin-Löf test (Un)(U_n).

Remarks

Example: the binary expansion of Chaitin's halting probability Ω\Omega is Martin-Löf random. Also, the set of non-random sequences has measure 00, because there is a universal Martin-Löf test whose intersection contains every non-random sequence.

Non-example: a computable sequence XX is not random. Let X↾nX \upharpoonright n be the string of the first nn bits of XX. The sets Un=[X↾n]U_n = [X \upharpoonright n] form a Martin-Löf test: they are uniformly computable and μ(Un)=2−n\mu(U_n) = 2^{-n}. And XX lies in all of them.

The Levin–Schnorr theorem gives an equivalent form with Kolmogorov complexity. Let KK be prefix-free complexity. Then XX is Martin-Löf random if and only if there is a constant cc with K(X↾n)≥n−cK(X \upharpoonright n) \ge n - c for all nn.
