Toric code

Builds on TorusPauli matricesStabilizer code

Example

Let L≥2L \ge 2 and divide the torus into an L×LL \times L square grid with periodic boundary conditions. The grid has L2L^2 vertices, 2L22L^2 edges and L2L^2 faces, called plaquettes. Put one qubit on each edge, so n=2L2n = 2L^2. For a vertex vv, let AvA_v be the product of the Pauli matrices XeX_e over the four edges ee that meet vv. For a plaquette pp, let BpB_p be the product of ZeZ_e over the four edges ee on the boundary of pp. The toric code is the stabilizer code whose stabilizer SS is generated by all AvA_v and BpB_p.

Check of the hypotheses: a vertex and a plaquette share either 00 or 22 edges, so AvA_v and BpB_p commute. Two XX-type operators commute, and so do two ZZ-type operators. So SS is abelian. Every element of SS is a product of an XX-type and a ZZ-type operator with sign +1+1, so −I∉S-I \notin S.

Parameters: the only relations among the generators are ∏vAv=I\prod_v A_v = I and ∏pBp=I\prod_p B_p = I. So SS has 2L2−22L^2 - 2 independent generators and the code has k=2L2−(2L2−2)=2k = 2L^2 - (2L^2 - 2) = 2 logical qubits. The logical operators are products of ZZ along a loop that winds around the torus. They also include products of XX along such a loop of the dual grid. The shortest such loops have length LL, so the distance is LL and the toric code is a [ ⁣[2L2,2,L] ⁣][\![2L^2, 2, L]\!] code.
