Proof
We show that the inverse map is continuous by testing closed sets.
- Since is bijective, it has an inverse function . By the definition of a homeomorphism, it remains to show that is continuous.
- By continuity via closed sets, it is enough to show that is closed in for each closed .
- Let be closed. The preimage is .
- For , we have if and only if for some , because is the unique with . So .
- The subspace topology on as a subset of itself is the topology of . So is a compact set in .
- Since closed subsets of compact sets are compact, is compact.
- The continuous image of a compact set is compact, so is compact in .
- Since is Hausdorff, compact subsets of a Hausdorff space are closed. So is closed in .
- By steps 4 and 8, is closed for each closed . So is continuous, and is a homeomorphism.
Idea
The inverse of is continuous exactly when sends closed sets to closed sets. In a compact space, closed sets are compact, and compactness survives the continuous map . In a Hausdorff space, compact sets are closed again.
