Proof of Riesz's lemma
Builds on Closed setA set is closed iff it equals its closureClosure in a metric spaceLinear subspace
Proof
We take a point outside , move it by a nearly closest point of , and normalise.
- Since , choose with . Let . This is a real number , since contains and the norms are nonnegative.
- . If , then for each there is with . So is in the closure of , by closure in a metric space.
- As is closed, it equals its closure, by this result. So , a contradiction.
- Since and , we have . So is not a lower bound of the distances, and there is with .
- Let . Then . Let . Then .
- Let . Then , where .
- As is a linear subspace, . So , by the definition of .
- Hence .
- So and for all .
Idea
A point outside a closed subspace has a positive distance from it. We pick a point of almost as close as possible, within the factor , and normalise the difference. The new vector has distance from , and this ratio is above because is almost .
