Proof that the closure is the set of limits of sequences
Builds on Metric spaceClosureConvergence of a sequence in a metric spaceClosure in a metric spaceThe reals are ArchimedeanClosure is the smallest closed supersetClosed sets contain their limits
Proof
We prove each direction separately.
- Let be a metric space, let , let , and let be the closure of .
- First let . By the description of the closure in a metric space, each gives a point with .
- We show that , in the sense of convergence. Let .
- The reals are Archimedean, so there is a natural number with . Then , and .
- For , symmetry of gives . So .
- Conversely, let be a sequence of points of with .
- By closure is the smallest closed superset, and is closed. So is a sequence of points of the closed set .
- Since closed sets contain their limits, we get .
Idea
A point of the closure has points of at distance less than for every , and these form a sequence that tends to it. Conversely, the closure is a closed set that contains . So it keeps every limit of points of .
