Proof that open balls form a basis of the metric topology

Proof

We check the second form of the definition of a basis for both families.

  1. Let ℬ\mathcal{B} be the set of all open balls B(x,r)B(x, r) with x∈Xx \in X and r>0r > 0. Let ℬ′\mathcal{B}' be the set of balls B(x,1/n)B(x, 1/n) with x∈Xx \in X and integer n≥1n \ge 1. Then ℬ′⊆ℬ\mathcal{B}' \subseteq \mathcal{B}.
  2. By open balls are open, each member of ℬ\mathcal{B} is in the metric topology τd\tau_d. So ℬ′⊆ℬ⊆τd\mathcal{B}' \subseteq \mathcal{B} \subseteq \tau_d.
  3. Let U∈τdU \in \tau_d and x∈Ux \in U. By the definition of τd\tau_d, there is a real ε>0\varepsilon > 0 with B(x,ε)⊆UB(x, \varepsilon) \subseteq U.
  4. The ball B(x,ε)B(x, \varepsilon) is in ℬ\mathcal{B} and contains xx, since d(x,x)=0<εd(x, x) = 0 < \varepsilon. So ℬ\mathcal{B} is a basis of τd\tau_d.
  5. Since the reals are Archimedean, there is an integer n≥1n \ge 1 with nε>1n \varepsilon > 1, that is, 1/n<ε1/n < \varepsilon.
  6. If d(x,y)<1/nd(x, y) < 1/n, then d(x,y)<εd(x, y) < \varepsilon. So x∈B(x,1/n)⊆B(x,ε)⊆Ux \in B(x, 1/n) \subseteq B(x, \varepsilon) \subseteq U.
  7. The ball B(x,1/n)B(x, 1/n) is in ℬ′\mathcal{B}'. So ℬ′\mathcal{B}' is also a basis of τd\tau_d.

Idea

Balls are open, and by the very definition of the metric topology every open set contains a ball around each of its points. A ball of radius 1/n1/n fits inside any given ball with the same centre once nn is large.
