Proof

We prove the forward direction directly and the converse by contraposition.

  1. Let (X,dX)(X, d_X) and (Y,dY)(Y, d_Y) be metric spaces and let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y.
  2. By definition, ff is continuous when f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) is open in XX for each open VV of YY.
  3. By continuity via open sets, ff is continuous if and only if condition (C) holds. (C): for each a∈Xa \in X and ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 such that dX(x,a)<δd_X(x, a) < \delta implies dY(f(x),f(a))<εd_Y(f(x), f(a)) < \varepsilon.
  4. Suppose ff is continuous. Let (xn)(x_n) be a sequence that converges to x∈Xx \in X, and let ε>0\varepsilon > 0.
  5. By (C) at a=xa = x, there is δ>0\delta > 0 such that dX(z,x)<δd_X(z, x) < \delta implies dY(f(z),f(x))<εd_Y(f(z), f(x)) < \varepsilon.
  6. Since xn→xx_n \to x, there is an integer NN with dX(xn,x)<δd_X(x_n, x) < \delta for all n≥Nn \ge N.
  7. By step 5, dY(f(xn),f(x))<εd_Y(f(x_n), f(x)) < \varepsilon for all n≥Nn \ge N. Hence f(xn)→f(x)f(x_n) \to f(x).
  8. Conversely, suppose ff is not continuous. By step 3, (C) fails at some a∈Xa \in X.
  9. So there is ε>0\varepsilon > 0 such that each δ>0\delta > 0 has some x∈Xx \in X with dX(x,a)<δd_X(x, a) < \delta and dY(f(x),f(a))≥εd_Y(f(x), f(a)) \ge \varepsilon.
  10. For each integer n≥1n \ge 1, apply step 9 with δ=1/n\delta = 1/n. This gives xn∈Xx_n \in X with dX(xn,a)<1/nd_X(x_n, a) < 1/n and dY(f(xn),f(a))≥εd_Y(f(x_n), f(a)) \ge \varepsilon.
  11. We show xn→ax_n \to a. Let η>0\eta > 0. The reals are Archimedean, so some natural number NN has Nη>1N \eta > 1. Then N≥1N \ge 1.
  12. For n≥Nn \ge N, we get dX(xn,a)<1/n≤1/N<ηd_X(x_n, a) < 1/n \le 1/N < \eta. So xn→ax_n \to a.
  13. But dY(f(xn),f(a))≥εd_Y(f(x_n), f(a)) \ge \varepsilon for every nn. So no NN makes dY(f(xn),f(a))<εd_Y(f(x_n), f(a)) < \varepsilon for all n≥Nn \ge N, and f(xn)↛f(a)f(x_n) \not\to f(a).
  14. So if f(xn)→f(x)f(x_n) \to f(x) for every convergent sequence xn→xx_n \to x, then ff is continuous.

Idea

Continuity in a metric space is the epsilon-delta condition. A convergent sequence eventually enters the δ\delta-ball, so its image eventually enters the ε\varepsilon-ball. If continuity fails at a point, the radii 1/n1/n pick out bad points that converge to it while their images stay away.
