Proof
We combine the two facts that images of connected sets are connected and that connected subsets of are intervals.
- The subspace topology on as a subset of itself is the topology of . So is a connected subset of , because is a connected space.
- The map is continuous. By continuous image of a connected set is connected, the set is connected.
- By connected subsets of the real line are intervals, is an interval. So for and , we have .
- Let be between and . If , take . If , take .
- Otherwise lies strictly between the two values. Let be the smaller and the larger of and . Then and .
- By step 3, . So there is with .
Idea
The image of a connected space under a continuous map is connected. In the connected sets are the intervals, and an interval that contains and contains each value between them.
