Proof that the Cantor set is closed
Builds on Cantor setClosed setOpen sets of a metric spaceFinite intersection of open sets is openIntersection of closed sets is closed
Proof
We show that each stage is closed, and then intersect.
- In the construction of the Cantor set, is one closed interval. Removing the open middle third of a closed interval leaves the two closed intervals and .
- So, by induction on , each is a union of closed intervals.
- A closed interval is closed in . Its complement is . Each point of it has the ball of radius inside the complement, so the complement is open by the ball criterion.
- A finite union of closed sets is closed. Its complement is , which is open by finite intersection of open sets is open.
- By steps 2 to 4, each is closed in .
- By intersection of closed sets is closed, with the nonempty index set , the set is closed in .
Idea
Each stage of the construction is a finite union of closed intervals, so it is closed. Closed sets stay closed under arbitrary intersections, and the Cantor set is the intersection of all stages.
