Proof
We argue by contradiction. We build a nested sequence of closed balls with radii tending to , and use completeness to get a point in all of them.
- Let be a complete metric space. Let be closed subsets of with for each . Here is the interior.
- Let . Each is open, since is closed.
- Claim: each nonempty open set meets each . Otherwise . The interior is the largest open subset, so , a contradiction.
- Let . By the same statement, is open and . Assume, for a contradiction, that .
- By step 3, the set is nonempty. It is open, since a topology is closed under finite intersections. Pick in it.
- By the description of open sets of a metric space, there is with . Here is the open ball. Let .
- Let be the closed ball. Since , we get .
- Suppose and are chosen. The set is open, since open balls are open. It is nonempty by step 3.
- As in steps 6 and 7, choose and with and .
- Write . By steps 7 and 9, , , and for all .
- By step 10, for . So for all .
- For , the triangle inequality gives .
- Given , choose . Step 12 then shows that is a Cauchy sequence.
- Since is complete, converges to some .
- Fix . The tail also converges to , and all its terms lie in by step 11.
- Closed balls are closed, and closed sets contain their limits. So for every .
- By steps 10 and 16, and for every . So but .
- This contradicts from step 4. So .
- This holds for every countable family of closed sets with empty interior. So is a Baire space.
Idea
A nonempty open set inside would leave room to shrink a ball away from , then from , and so on. The centres of these nested balls form a Cauchy sequence, and completeness gives a limit. That limit lies in the open set but in no .
