Proof of the density of the irrationals
Builds on Density of the rationalsExistence of square roots of nonnegative realsIrrationality of the square root of 2Irrational numberRational numbersThe reals form an ordered field
Proof
- Let and be real numbers with .
- By the existence of square roots, there is a real with . Since , we have , so .
- The number is irrational, by the irrationality of the square root of 2.
- Dividing by keeps the order in the ordered field . So .
- By the density of the rationals, there is a rational with . Again by density, there is a rational with .
- Since , at least one of them is nonzero. Call it . Then is rational, and .
- Multiply by : . Let .
- Suppose is a rational number . Then is a quotient of rationals with , so is rational. This contradicts step 3.
- So is an irrational number with .
Idea
A nonzero rational multiple of is irrational. Scale the interval by , find a nonzero rational inside it, and scale back.
